DNA Will Be Collected On Robbers, Burglars
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Anyone convicted of a robbery or burglary will be required to give a DNA sample under a bill (LB385) approved by Nebraska lawmakers.
DNA has been collected from violent and sexual offenders in Nebraska since 1997.
Research shows that as many as half of violent offenders have previously committed nonviolent crimes. Of those, 25 percent have committed a robbery or burglary.
The DNA profiles are entered into the FBI's national database.
The bill passed on Thursday was by Sen. Joel Johnson of Kearney.
