DNA MATCH LEADS TO CHARGES IN FIVE-YEAR OLD RAPE CASE

Five years after a rape new technology leads El Paso and Teller County investigators to a suspect

DNA evidence was collected as part of the 2001 investigation of the rape of a Green Mountain Falls woman. Investigators later issued an arrest warrant for the person matching the specific DNA profile of the evidence gathered at the scene.

The sample was run again recently in a national DNA database and in it matched to 49-year old Daniel Hayes.

He is now charged with sexual assault and burglary for the 2001 rape of a Green Mountain Falls woman.

Hayes is currently serving a 21-year prison term for rape in Kentucky.

The DNA-based warrant was the first issued by the two counties.
