 | Fairfax, Va. (AP) - Authorities say that preliminary
DNA tests have linked a California death row inmate to three 1988
slayings in northern Virginia.
Fairfax
Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Horan Junior says he is working with
California officials to determine whether Alfredo Prieto can be
brought to Virginia for trial.
Prieto, who's 39,
was sentenced to death 14 years ago for raping and killing a
15-year-old girl but still has not exhausted his state appeals or
begun his federal appeals.
Veronica "Tina"
Jefferson, a 24-year-old CIA financial officer, was raped and
fatally shot behind an Arlington elementary school in May 1988.
Seven months later, Rachael Raver and Warren Fulton, both 22, were
found shot to death in a Reston field. Raver also was raped.
In 2000, Virginia's DNA database revealed that the
same person was involved in both unsolved cases but provided no
suspects.
Technicians in California at some point
entered Prieto's DNA into a national database -and Prieto's DNA
matched the samples from the Virginia killings.
