DNA at robbery scene leads to arrest

woman in her Mountain View home two months ago, police said.

Police say DNA evidence collected at the scene led them to Charles Bevin, an unemployed San Jose man, who was already in custody at San Jose's main jail on unrelated charges.

He now faces charges in the Aug. 22 incident in Mountain View, including robbery, false imprisonment, elder abuse and auto theft.

The woman was sleeping alone in the bedroom of her Marilyn Drive home when she awoke around 2:34 a.m. and saw a man standing there, Mountain View police reported. The man demanded cash, the woman's purse and several antique gold pocket watches, which he obtained before tying up the woman inside a closet.

He fled with the stolen belongings in the woman's Honda CRV, which was found abandoned a few blocks away later that morning.

The woman, who was not hurt, managed to escape the closet and call 911 moments after the suspect left, according to police.

The watches and other items taken during the robbery have not been located and police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Mountain View Police Department at (650) 903-6344.
