Man linked by DNA to burglaries is held
CARLSBAD: A Carlsbad man linked to Encinitas and San Marcos burglaries by DNA on cigarette butts was arrested yesterday, a sheriff's official said.
The 44-year-old man was arrested at his home, where deputies reportedly recovered stolen property.
The man is suspected of breaking into It's a Love Thing shop on North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas on Dec. 1 and taking $5,600 in goods, sheriff's Sgt. Chris Serritella said. The front window was smashed, and some jewelry and clothes were scattered on the ground.
Sheriff's crime lab technicians matched the Carlsbad man's DNA to a cigarette butt picked up at the crime scene. His DNA also matched a discarded cigarette collected at a home in San Marcos broken into late last year, Serritella said.
Man slain in double shooting identified
ESCONDIDO: A man who was killed in a double shooting over the weekend has been identified as 67-year-old Herman Wiesemeyer of Escondido.
His longtime friend, Octavian Chrisan, 68, of Las Vegas, was booked into the Vista Jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a three-hour standoff with police Sunday morning, police said.
A second shooting victim was expected to recover from his wounds.
Police have not determined a motive for the shooting at the home on Parktree Lane near the Reidy Creek Golf Course.
Investigators were waiting for autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
Robber takes $250 from gas station
FALLBROOK: A man in a gray, hooded sweat shirt held up a gas station late Monday, sheriff's officials said.
The robber entered the gas station on Main Avenue at Ammunition Road at 11:30 p.m. and simulated a gun in his pocket, authorities said. He got away with about $250.
He was described as Latino, 18 to 25 years old, with a light-gray tank top pulled up over his mouth and nose.
He was seen climbing into the passenger side of a gray Ford Explorer or Lincoln Navigator.
Convenience store robbed at gunpoint
SAN MARCOS: Two masked gunmen robbed a Mission Road convenience store Monday night, sheriff's officials said.
They said the gunmen entered La Sorpresa Barata at 7:30 p.m. and got away with about $600. They were described as Latino, 20 to 30 years old, wearing ski masks, gray jackets and dark pants.
The two men were seen leaving in a white Cadillac.
Screwdriver used in holding up clerk
SAN MARCOS: A Shell gas station clerk was threatened with a screwdriver during a robbery early yesterday.
Two robbers entered the gas station on Rancho Santa Fe Road at San Marcos Boulevard at 3:30 a.m. and got away with about $250 cash.
They fled in a newer model silver pickup, possibly a Dodge Ram.
210 pounds of pot found in car trunk
ESCONDIDO: Officers discovered about 210 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of a car yesterday morning, police said.
Officers stopped the Chevrolet at 9:10 a.m. after receiving reports that the driver was looking into vehicles in a parking lot on Seven Oakes Road near El Norte Parkway, police said.
Inside the trunk, police found 30 bundles of marijuana with an estimated street value of $105,000.
The driver, a 21-year-old man with dual residences in Mexico and National City, was arrested on suspicion of transporting marijuana and possessing marijuana for sale.
Woman passenger killed in car crash
VISTA: A woman was killed yesterday when the car she was riding in was hit by a Ford Explorer, sheriff's officials said.
The woman, whose name wasn't released, died on the scene.
She was a passenger in a gold Buick that turned left in front of the sport-utility vehicle at Melrose Drive and Shadowridge Drive at 12:13 p.m., authorities said. The crash was under investigation.
